Two four-person teams square off on a sheet of ice. The goal is get the stone (a granite block weighing nearly 20kg) in the center of the target. First, the throw, precise and calibrated. Then, two teammates use brooms to smooth the ice between the stone and the target. The fourth teammate, the "skip", is the strategist: he or she is the tactician of the team, and throws last. The challenge, much like chess, requires concentration, strategy, and precision. A traditional Scottish game, it became an Olympic discipline in 1998.
